Historical Overview
Opened by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in February 1965, the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) was custom-built to facilitate one of the biggest monetary transitions in Southern Hemisphere history: Australia’s changeover from British imperial pounds, shillings, and pence to a brand-new, independent decimal currency system.
Situated proudly in the nation’s capital of Canberra, it holds the historic distinction of being the first sovereign mint in Australia that was not established as a colonial branch of the British Royal Mint.
Unlike its older counterpart in Perth, the Royal Australian Mint serves as the Commonwealth’s primary circulating facility, striking every single standard circulating coin in the pockets of Australian citizens.

The Kangaroo Series (Gold & Silver): Not to be confused with Perth’s version, the RAM’s Kangaroo program dates back to 1993.
