The Complete Guide to the Silver Kangaroo

The Silver Kangaroo was introduced by the Royal Australian Mint in 1993 and made available in proof from 1998.

All of the Australian Silver Kangaroo coins produced by the Royal Australian Mint feature 1 oz of .999 pure silver. The coins are considered legal tender in Australia, and have been issued a face value of $1 (AUD) by the Australian government as a result.

Each coin contains one troy ounce of .999 fineness until 2015 when it increased to .9999 fine silver – Diameter 40.60mm

2007 -2009 Great Australian Artists – The mint launched the ‘Great Australian Artists’ Series and invited three prominent Australian artists to design coins featuring the kangaroo. The Mint invited Rolf Harris to develop a kangaroo design which launched the series in 2007. Followed by Reg Mombassa in 2008 and Ken Done in 2009.

2009 Special Edition Pack (Coloured)– In 2009 a special edition ‘Great Australian Artists’ set was released. This included the original 3 coin designs, released in silver proof “pad-printed” coloured versions.

2013 – 2015 Explorers’ First Sightings – A 3 coin series titled ‘Explorers’ First Sightings’ was released in 2013 followed by the second in the series in 2014 and the final release in 2015.

2016 – 2019 Seasons Change – From 2016 to 2019, the series documented an Eastern Grey Kangaroo growing throughout the seasons. The 2016 features a joey staying warm in her mother’s pouch in winter. Her spring months were depicted on the 2017 coin. In 2018 the grown animal was seen finding shade among the trees. In 2019 the silver coin with frosted finish depicted a grown kangaroo with her own joey, as a sentimental conclusion to the story.

2018 F15 Privy – This coin celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Royal Australian Mint Kangaroo Series. This low mintage coin of 5,000 worldwide also includes the F15 Privy Mark (shown below).

2018 Anniversary– To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the program, the Royal Australian Mint and German coin distributor MDM partnered to issue a coin and bar combo set. The set includes the 2018 Kangaroo 1-ounce silver coin, with a 2-ounce bar (bearing a special design) surrounding the coin. (shown below)
